Interviewing

I like to think of building a company, department, or team like building a sports team. If you were going to field a baseball team, you would know exactly what you were looking for in a player. You wouldn't hire a catcher to play outfield or a first baseman to play shortstop.

Just like you would know exactly what you were looking for in a player, you need to know exactly what you are looking for in an employee. Once you know what you are looking for, you need to ask questions that will get you the information you want.

When you are looking for interview questions ask yourself these things:

1. What information do I want to know about the candidate?
2. Will this question draw out the information I am looking for?
3. Will this question help me distinguish between candidates?
4. Can I predict the answer every candidate will give? (if so, don't use)

Asking the right questions is the key to making sure you are getting the right candidate for the job and not just hiring the person you like the best or is the most friendly.

See you tomorrow night!

Wendy
